HISTORY BEHIND THE YA KUN
In 1926, a 15-year-old young boy, Loi Ah Koon, took his black wooden case and scrambled on an old Chinese board poised to set sail from Hainan Island to Singapore, but he finally tumbled out onto the soil of Singapore.
Some uncertainties were roaming around in his head without knowing the kid and can he move towards the local Hainanese community where he works as an assistant in a coffee stall.
After that, Ah Koon baked up the tricks of fast trading, and without taking a long time, he heard the happy jingling of his earnings in khaki shorts pockets. Then, due to his entrepreneurial spirit, he partnered with two fellow Chinese immigrants to start their own business of coffee stall at Telok Ayer Basin.
But then he decided to make their installation and left this stall to fend for himself. Due to his determination, Ah Koon decided to partner with the Sans, that was business as usual; they served coffee, tea, egg, and toast.
The merchants, police inspectors coolies money lenders, operators, and many more were addicted to the hot coffee Ah joined and munched on his charcoal toast that was grilled.
After that, he married a girl from his hometown, and in 1936, his wife also joined him in Singapore. She works with her husband and perfects her skills in making homemade Kaya, which is a local spread of egg and coconut on the toast.
After getting enough resources, Ah Koon also began roasting coffee; he bought some coffee beans, added planta margin and sugar onto them, roasted these over firewood and then opened their stall. He sacrifices a lot to service his customers and earn money.
He slept on the hard wooden countertop at the desk to first serve his customers at 5 a.m. When the customer gave their order, he put chalk in his hand and noted down their preferences quickly on the same countertop that he had slept on.
The Irate customers never floored him, but he served with a smile and shrug and served more than Food for the body. He also dished out the remaining dishes after serving. For those who were needy, he freely gave them anything, and for those who read, he circulated the dailies, and for those who were regulars, he extended the credit to them.
After serving more than 15 years at Telok Ayer Basin, he switched his business to Lau pa Sat Street, where he named his stall Ya KUN coffee stall. Ya KUN is the new hanyu word that is equivalent to Ah koon; he spent more than 15 years in Lau Pa Sat, and due to this, he was awarded the most courteous stall in Lau Pa Sat.
In 1984, he moved back to the street of Telok Ayer Transit market of Food to make way for Lau pa sat, and then finally, in 1998, the Ya kun Kaya toast coffee stall was renovated into the present East Square and now managed by their children.
